Christmas Cards, Pt. 2

This cool vintage '69 Topps of long-time Mets catcher and World Series champion Jerry Grote comes courtesy of Detroit Tigers super-collector Pat over at Hot Corner Cards.

I've been the lucky recipient of many great PWEs from Pat over the course of the past year or so, and this one is among the best.  A gesture of "Cards-giving" as he coined it in his note.  Hey, it works for me!

The '69 design is one from this era of cards that I'm not totally over the moon about, but I have a suspicion that in a few years its Heritage reincarnation will suit me just fine.  Furthermore, while the card fronts aren't award-winners, the backs are pretty darn hot.  Love the color, the layout and, of course, the cartoon!

Thanks again, Pat, and Happy Holidays to ya, buddy!

  1. I don't know what the consensus is, but I actually really like the pink backs of the '69 set.

  2. I love the backs of the '69 set! I've listened to Grote on the radio a few times here in central TX. I think he grew up in San Antonio, but I've heard some interviews and also heard him do some play by play for the Round Rock Express. Sounds kinda grumpy, but I still really liked listening to him - seems like a baseball lifer.
