Yer Daily Fix, 7.20.14

2009 Upper Deck #372

I believe Chris Davis' only appearance in a 2008 Upper Deck product was the horrendously sprawling Documentary set, but that doesn't really count.  Therefore, I think this might qualify as his official UD rookie card. Not sure how or why Crush didn't appear in a primary Upper Deck set in '08, but Topps added him into its Updates & Highlights, Heritage High Numbers, and Bowman releases that year.

Yer Daily Fix, 7.19.14

1990 Topps #157

Remember when the Astros used to wear the same uniforms at home and on the road?  Remember when Craig Biggio was a catcher?  This is the future-HOFers second-year Topps card, and arguably his best of the 1990 collecting year (with Score putting up a pretty darn good specimen, as well).

Yer Daily Fix, 7.18.14

1989 Topps Tiffany #480

It's nearly impossible to tell from the scan, but this is a fancy Topps Tiffany card.  According to people who know much more than I, the print run of the '89 Tiffany set was 25,000.  I'd love to own a complete '89 Tiffany set some day, as this is my favorite year of Topps ever.  Keith's card set me back $0.49 on eBay recently.

Yer Daily Fix, 7.17.14

1994 Score #439

Unless I'm mistaken, 1994 was the last year that former-Met Mackey Sasser was featured in a set by the mainstream sports card manufacturers of the era.  He played only a handful of games during the '94 and '95 seasons; hardly enough to be featured in any release despite the gluttony of brands.

Yer Daily Fix, 7.16.14

2005 Upper Deck #330
[Ed. Note: Yer Daily Fix, or YDF for short, is intended to be a snack-sized blog post for each day featuring a card that is at least mildly interesting. Minimal commentary. Think of it as my blog version of a tweet.  Or not.]

Millville's Mike Trout was the MVP of last night's Derek Jeter Orgy MLB All-Star Game, but I'd like to see him try to pull off an El Duque wind-up!  I love it when a baseball card's photo is able to capture a player's trademark pose or action.  Just...perfect.

Hot Corner Delivery

Everybody's favorite Tigers blogger/collector--Pat of Hot Corner Cards--recently hooked me up with a pretty righteous PWE of new Mets cards from this year's Bowman and GQ sets.  Pat has been powering my Mets collection for nearly as long as I've had this blog (which, by the way, celebrated its second birthday last month -- though I totally forgot and missed it).  I have a bunch of great Mets cards in my collection thanks solely to Pat.

The above TdA card is my favorite of the newest batch to arrive at Kaz Manor.  The way d'Arnaud began the season, you had to start wondering how the guy wound up on anyone's list of top prospects.  But, a brief assignment to Triple-A did wonders and Travis has been ripping the cover off the ball since being recalled a couple weeks ago.  We Mets fans are borderline giddy.

Speaking of d'Arnaud...

His regular Bowman base card, flanked by Big Bart Colon and prospect Cesar Puello.  Given the trade whispers, there may not be too many more new Colon cards in a Mets uni.

These greenies are serial numbered to 199.  Gant is presently tied for fourth in the Sally League with nine wins for the Savannah Sand Gnats.

Purple and Chrome of Miller Diaz, a teammate of Gant's at Low-A Savannah.  He's a strikeout pitcher who probably profiles as a middle reliever in the bigs.  I wonder how Bowman goes about choosing which 'prospects' to feature in their sets?

Lastly, a nibble from this year's Gypsy Queen set...

This is a product I'm very much on the fence about.  I like it more than A&G (probably the only person alive who might profess to that), but it's obviously not on the level of importance as, say, Archives or Heritage.  At least in my world.  But, it's a nice enough looking set, and any Mets that populate the checklist are surely targets on my radar.

And there you have it.  On a night when baseball wishes us to genuflect to the altar of Derek S. Jeter, I brazenly have chosen to wax about Mets cards.  Pretty much a no-brainer.

Thank you, Pat!

2014 Gypsy Queen Debut All-Stars #AS-MM

Forget all the nonsense about his temper and immaturity, this guy hit 51 doubles last year.  As a rookie.  And, for what it's worth, GQ hit a home run with the concept for this insert set.
